From Sketch to Shoe to Rejection

This shoe is one of my favorites and it's not being made. It happens way more often than I'd like unfortunately.
We rely on stores like Nordstrom and Macy's because without big orders, shoes just don't get made. That means that shoes that don't "fit in" at Nordstrom or Macy's don't usually get bought by their buyers.
Well apparently this shoe didn't fit what they think their customer would like. It's the nerdy shoe with a great personality that nobody picks to be on their team in P.E. cause she's not the cheerleader shoe. Don't worry nerdy shoe, the cheerleader shoe will peak early in life and get pregnant her first year of junior college.
Ummm. Ya.

It starts with an idea-
I saw this vintage lucite heel (that is not my wrinkly thumb) and thought it was so pretty and could be very Betsey.
Then, there was this Charlotte Olympia shoe that was such an amazing shape...

Based on these two things, plus the other ideas I had for a group of vintage inspired shoes, I drew a sketch...

betseyfall10_Page_08

I thickened the heel shape and changed the platform a bit. I added a sweet little bow as a maryjane strap.

lucite1

Then after a trip to China and a few prototypes, the real deal was finished!

Pretty awesome! :)

Unfortunately... we won't see it in stores. They didn't think you'd like it/buy it. Maybe they're right but I wish they would have tried.

I would have bought that in a hot second. Tell your buyers they are fools. On second thought, I need to write that post so you can just email it too them. I need to use this as an example!

WHAT!!?? I am so in love with this shoe!! I wish they would have taken a chance as well because I definitely would have bought it. It's a cute shoe to wear when you want to be notices. So gorgeous- only thing I would have wanted different is for it to be the purple in your sketch and not pink. You're very talented!

These shoes are gorgeous. Genuinely. I not only like this sample but I would've loved to have seen them in black and other colors as well. They seem right on trend too! I think they made a big mistake passing them up.

What? These shoes are fucking awesome! It's a shame. It'd be welcome in my closet any day.

Thanks guys :) Maybe I'll start showing you more of the rejects. Some of them really are my favorite. Boo.

I would absolutely buy this shoe! It's an amazing creation! :) I think it would be even cooler if it had the little flowers inside of it, kinda like the original inspiration. But regardless, it screams Betsey! Love it!

Lovely sketch. i like the shoe but dont love it. can you re-sumbit it with some changes? what would have made me love it is if the bow was bigger or fuller i guess is the word. i also like the heel but the flowers look painted on..is there a way to make it more like the original one where they carve the flowers into the heel. it would prob be more pricey but id be willing to pay the extra $

Those are gorgeous! I would have bought them for sure! I agree about putting the flowers inside the heel, like the original inspiration...would have been a really unique shoe.

I'd buy this shoe in a second! Can't believe they didn't buy it... their loss :( You made a beautiful piece of art in those shoes, I would LOVE to add them to my shoe collection... wish Nordstrom's and Macy's was smarter!!!

AH I actually love them! The lucite heel is super cool, as is the exagerrated platform. You should post more about the design process from sketch to production, its really interesting!

WHAT?!?! Let me tell you, I not a huge fan of pink. But I would have picked up those shoes with out even thinking about it!

Those are super cute! Thanks for sharing! I love to see your sketches and the resulting prototype - even if the shoe won't be sold. It is just so awesome to have an inside look to the whole shoe designing process!

Thanks for sharing this post - I think the shoe looks awesome! I'd have IDd it as one by Charlotte because of the shape of the platform.
I'm sorry it never made it to the stores!

Shoezq said...

Yeah so I would have been the 20th person in line to buy these. Now I'm sad :(

MissMae said...

I am sad too! I love this shoe and it is really cute!!! I would have bought it. :) It seems like the buyers should be asking the readers of your blog which shoes should get made...

The shoes are amazing!
Id buy them, defo.
And the sketch to production series is really cool and interesting to see =)
would be great to see more! xx

I really enjoyed getting a peek into your creative side. The thought process always intrigues me of how designers come up with their designs.

First I love the shoe! Who makes the decisions? Buyers? I just don't understand. Second, thanks for sharing your thought process with us and the method to your genius! This was such a fun read! :)

What???? I buy shoes from Nordstroms ALL THE TIME except recently because I haven't had any styles jump out at me saying BUY ME! Now these would have shouted that at me And believe me I would have bought these! In every color even. Maybe the buyers need to change what their doing lately because like I said before their shoes lately have been a snore!

jillian said...

in. love. no seriously i need these.

RAC ATTACK said...

I'd totally wear them!!

Jessie P said...

GREAT post. I agree with Ivy

TheShoeGirl said...

I agree... I like the vintage heel better but the process for making the flowers inside the heel was WAY too expensive. This would have saved about $35 at retail :)

pretty amazing i think i just got chills from one shoe gal to another :) amazinggg!

OMG it is like the cuttest shoe ever, i would have brought it straight away :p

I love it, and it actually looks like the Elizabeth & James platform pumps from this Spring that I believe Nordstroms IS carrying.... I wonder if that had anything to do with the decision making process?

I actually like the Mary-Jane version better anyway!

i think it's freakin awesome. i often don't see enough character in the shoes at Macys/Nords and it bores me. shame on them!

SO CUTE!!
Macy's has really gone down hill and Nordstom is sucking lately too...I think they're making poor choices.

These are amazing! I love seeing your train of thought. The Lucite heel is gorgeous--I think the only thing that would hold me back from buying these is that the platform is crazy-high. But I reeeeally love this concept overall. Good work! <3

Gorgeous shoes! I don't understand, frankly, why you don't open a store of your own to sell them there and give a damn about the retailers. Or an on-line shop? It's the easiest thing.

I LOVE that shoe. I would totally have bought it. what a bummer! and it SCREAMS Betsey Johnson.

I would buy them instantly! And I don't usually wear heels, platforms or pink!! Sorry to bother you but could you critique my shoe designs. They're a bit amateur but I could learn!

Crystal (hausofthorne@gmail.com) said...

I feel a stabbing pain in my chest at the thought of this shoe getting rejected!!! I think you should do your OWN shoe line eventually so that you can design and make your own decisions as to what goes into production and what doesn't!

Anonymous said...

I love the color, the shape and the thickness of the heel but not so much the flowers. It apears cheap and kinda tacky... without the flowers I would buy it in a heart beat.

I would have bought them! They are soooo cool!

Stunning! Love the higher, chunkier lucite heel-not often you see that (Irregular Choice do a lot of see through heels, but they are usually shorter). Gorgeous!

Thats a great design! Make one in black & I'll buy it.
